Detailed vision and planning framework for the mullasery canal neighborhood of Kochi

The Integrated Framework for the Mullassery canal region demonstrates an alternative direction to building resilience against the adverse effects of climate-induced risks by taking a landscape approach. In order to maximize the impact, the project considers a precinct-level framework for flooding rather than one that is narrowly focused on a single water channel viz.
The engagement to prepare a Detailed project report came to us after winning the Ente Kochi Ideas competition (link) in order to detail and test the ideas, scope and feasibility through engagement with various stakeholders and detailed site analyses.

This Detailed Project Report conceptualises pilot projects as catalytic interventions that leads to systemic change. Kochi will need to increasingly adopt blue-green systems and strategic planning to increase urban resilience, embrace multi-modal mobility with a prioritisation for non-motorised modes, and strengthen the social contract between government and citizens through more participatory budgeting, design and collaborative governance frameworks.

Further, the framework articulates two pilot projects that integrate blue-green infrastructure for flood mitigation with public realm and streetscape improvements that improve citizen wellbeing, livelihoods, biodiversity and sustainable urban mobility.
